Effects of background knowledge on the teaching of English reading

Abstract
 
Comprehension is an interactive process between the reader’s background knowledge and the text. Although some cues are provided in the passage, reading cannot be finished without necessary background knowledge. People may know the meaning of words, but they can never understand the whole passage or deep meaning if it is lack of background knowledge. Background knowledge plays a crucial role in reading. On the other hand, reading to activating background knowledge is a prerequisite for a successful reading. Hence, reading should be the result of interacting between linguistic knowledge and their own would knowledge.
The purpose of this article is to introduce the background knowledge and its effects on English reading in order to prove the vital role of background knowledge in reading comprehension. Based on this discussion suggested methods are available for employing background knowledge in English Reading.

摘  要

阅读理解是读者知识(背景知识)与篇章信息相互作用的结果。在阅读时,读者的背景知识是10分必要的.缺乏背景知识,理解是不完整的,片面的`,就会出现只能理解文中每1个单词的意思却无法理解文章的整体或深层意思的现象。因此,理解应是语言知识和读者脑中各种知识相互作用的结果。然而,激活背景知识是阅读成功的先决条件。这篇文章的目的是阐叙背景知识以及它在英语阅读中的作用来证明在英语阅读中背景知识的重要性。在此基础上,提出合理运用背景知识来促进英语阅读教学水平的提高的几种有效方法。
